Ruth Marks

My small scale figurative sculptures are whimsical representations of fierce feminine archetypes. They represent aspirational qualities of calm strength and a joyful persistence. The are meant to evoke a folk tale narrative or fable. I make them first in paper clay, and then sometimes cast in resin.

My most recent series of astronaut figures are inspired by the other worldly experience of being treated for cancer during the pandemic. I often felt like a solitary traveler surrounded by futuristic technology in a strange land, so thinking of myself as an astronaut gave me courage for my journey.

The series before the Astronauts was called Wild Royalty. They are heavily influenced by Maurice Sendak, Nick Cave sound suits, Bjork, Missy Elliot and Kiki Smith. I love celebrating  and embellishing these dark, murky, playful and fierce figures.

During and after attending  art school, I hustled to have shows at art galleries and juried fairs. While I don't hustle my artwork in the same way, being in the studio and making these figures begins me great joy. My work is for sale here on this site and upon request.

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area.
